A Live Photo is more than just a still image; it’s a three-second window into a memory. By capturing the moments just before and after you press the shutter, your iPhone allows you to transform everyday shots into creative loops or professional-looking long exposures with just a few taps.
What is a Live Photo?
A Live Photo records 1.5 seconds of motion and sound before and after you take a picture. This format provides the flexibility to select a different "Key Photo" if someone blinked, or to apply motion effects that turn a simple snap into something more dynamic.
How to Apply Effects to Live Photos
Transforming your photos doesn't require third-party editing software. Everything you need is built directly into the Photos app on your iPhone.
Step 1: Open the Photos app.
Step 2: Select a photo that has the Live badge in the corner.
Step 3: Tap the Live button in the upper-left corner of the screen.
Step 4: Choose one of the following effects: Loop, Bounce, or Long Exposure.
The effect is applied instantly and is non-destructive, meaning you can revert to the original Live Photo at any time.
Live Photo Effects Explained
- Loop: This turns your photo into a continuous video loop. It works best for subjects with consistent movement, such as a flowing river or a busy Cairo street scene.
- Bounce: This effect plays your Live Photo forward, then backward, creating a repetitive "boomerang" style motion. It’s ideal for capturing a friend jumping into a pool or a candid laugh.
- Long Exposure: Traditionally requiring a tripod and a DSLR, this effect blurs motion while keeping still elements sharp. Use this for waterfalls or car headlights at night to create beautiful light trails.
